Safety Management System Development and 18001

Benefit from Hastam's unparalleled expertise in Safety Management Systems

Hastam strongly advises its clients that for their protection Safety Management Systems (SMS) should conform to the requirements of BS OHSAS 18001 (usually just called '18001'). This creates the benefit of having a System aligned to your business's requirements rather than attempting to reflect obscure guidance or complex legislation.  However, setting up a safety management system based on 18001 can be a daunting prospect.  Hastam can significantly reduce the time and cost, eliminate trial and error, simplify the process, avoid staff stress and ensure your future success. We believe that more and more organisations are recognising the benefits of 18001 but many are too busy to make the conversion from their existing management system.  Hastam can offer a complete package for the development and implementation of 18001.

In brief we are able to do the following:

We can provide the full implementation package, or just individual elements if that better suits your requirements. We will happily prepare a proposal to meet your specific requirements.

Are you interested in changing your organisation's Safety Management System (SMS) to bring it more into line with 18001 but put off by the trouble and expense of getting external certification? Many people do not know that you can get all the benefits of implementing 18001 without the expense of external certification,  This is because 18001 allows for a number of alternative approaches as described in the 'Scope' section of the Standard.

These are applicable to any organisation that wishes to demonstrate conformity with the OHSAS 18001 Standard by:

  1. making a self-determination and self-declaration, or
  2. seeking confirmation of its conformance by parties having an interest in the organisation, such as customers, or
  3. seeking confirmation of its self-declaration by a party external to the organisation, or
  4. seeking certification/registration of its OH&S management system by an external organisation.

These options are, of course, arranged in increasing degree of rigour but you should choose the option that is 'fit for purpose' for your organisation.

If you would like to explore the possibility of making a self-declaration and/or having your self-declaration confirmed by Hastam please contact enquires@hastam.co.uk .

BS OHSAS 18001 EXPLAINED

BS-OHSAS Diagram

BS OHSAS 18001 is the internationally recognised specification for occupational health and safety management systems.  Because it is a specification, organisations can be assessed against it to give the assurance demanded by stakeholders.

The Standard promotes a safe and healthy working environment by providing a framework that allows an organisation to consistently identify and control its health and safety risks, reduce the potential for accidents, aid legislative compliance and improve overall performance.

In following the Plan-Do-Check-Act approach of many management system standards, BS OHSAS 18001 has been designed to be compatible with ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental), to help your organisation meet their health and safety obligations in an efficient manner.

The following key areas are addressed by BS OHSAS 18001:

  1. Planning for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
  2. OHSAS management programme
  3. Structure and responsibility
  4. Training, awareness and competence
  5. Consultation and communication
  6. Operational control
  7. Emergency preparedness and response
  8. Performance measuring, monitoring and improvement
