Following several roles within the construction industry, Richard joined a major US paper manufacturing company in 1999 as a project safety specialist.  The role involved advising and leading the company risk assessment and machine guarding programme to meet the, then in draft, industry guidance Making Paper Safely.

In late 2003, Richard became the Group Health and Safety Manager for the largest UK paper manufacturing company, with responsibility for six paper mills, nineteen waste paper depots and thirteen logistics depots.
Since 2008, Richard has largely worked within the paper, power, manufacturing and construction sectors as a consultant.  He has worked extensively on safety management systems, audit of safety management systems, safety culture, and human factors and has led several fatality and major injury investigations.

During accident investigations, Richard has worked closely with legal defence teams in defending accident claims.  Richard has been extensively involved within the paper industry advisory body and co-wrote the HSE guidance Rewinding Paper Safely.

Richard's research interests include safety culture, behavioural based safety effectiveness and Safety Management Systems.  His doctorate studied the effectiveness of behavioural based safety within a paper manufacturing environment.
