Graduating in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham in 1986, Steve began his career in process engineering design and production support, initially with Courtauld's Viscose and from 1989 with Ciba Grimsby. From 1994 to 2001 he was Plant Manager, firstly for a major hazard Agrochemical manufacturing facility, including dedicated phosgenation and hydrogenation units, and then for a multipurpose Agrochemicals unit, carrying out a diverse range of organic chemical syntheses.
In 2001, following the separation of the Agrochemicals business to form Syngenta Grimsby, Steve became site Technical Support Manager responsible for HSE and Quality management systems and support functions, and the process development group. He managed the preparation and secured HSE acceptance of the site COMAH Safety Report and saw the site receive its third successive CIA Diamond award in 2003 for outstanding safety performance.
Since 2003 Steve has worked as a risk management consultant, working primarily as an associate with other consultancies. He received his MSc with distinction in Health and Safety Management in 2005 after studying with the University of Leicester Scarman Centre. Principle consultancy activities are major accident hazard risk assessment, human error analysis and support for risk management system assessment and development, including legal compliance reviews. Major clients for COMAH Safety Report risk assessment include BP, ConocoPhillips, Dow, Croda, Novartis and United Utilities. Steve is also able to support the development and delivery of safety training, including safety culture change and behavioural safety.
