Doctor Tony Boyle PhD, MSc, BSc, AFBPsS, CFIOSH, MIRM
Chartered Occupational Psychologist, Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner
After completing a psychology degree Tony Boyle worked at the National Institute of Industrial Psychology (NIIP) where, inter alia, he studied accidents involving high voltage switchgear. He left the NIIP to complete a PhD in the statistical theory of accident causation.
Following a period of teaching health and safety and doing research, including research into road accident blackspots in London, he set up his own software company and later incorporated this into the health, safety and environmental consultancy, Hastam, set up principally by Aston University Health and Safety Personnel. Tony was Hastam's Managing Director and later Chairman and although he has retired from this role he is still a non-executive director.
He has published around 50 papers, articles and book chapters and he is the author of the 'standard' text on health and safety risk management, published by IOSH.
Tony has worked on a number of expert witness reports, including the explosion of Blast Furnace No 5 at Port Talbot. He is currently working with Professor Richard Booth on two major accidents. He has recently prepared an expert witness report, and given evidence, on Safety Management Systems for the inquest into the Potters Bar derailment.
Here are some examples of Dr Boyle's work:
