Having developed the revised standard Managing Safely course for IOSH in 1998, we have run large numbers throughout industry since then. This placed us in an ideal position to develop a new version of this highly popular course based on the sound management principles contained in OHSAS 18001. However, even if your management system is based on HSG65, or any other model, the principles still apply as we base the courses on generic HASTAM models which follow the Plan, Do, Check, Act approach.

The courses provide a proactive, risk based approach to health and safety management. Managing Safely is a highly cost effective means of providing general health and safety training for managers and supervisors. It includes both practical and written assessments.

Our fully revised courses contain new material developed from our detailed experience of the typical needs of managers, including

Bullet behavioural safety and safety culture
Bullet reliability of, and dependence on, risk controls
Bullet demonstrating personal commitment.

We have now launched two versions of the new Managing Safely based on OHSAS 18001, to reflect the position and role of the managers attending.

Senior and Middle Managers

The version senior and middle managers follows the HASTAM Continual Improvement Model and places emphasis on the setting of OH&S objectives, preparation of OH&S management programmes and the measurement of performance.

It includes the following material.

Bullet setting OH&S objectives
Bullet preparing OH&S management programmes
Bullet measuring and reviewing OH&S performance
Bullet behavioural safety and safety culture
Bullet demonstrating personal commitment.

First Line Managers

The version for first line managers follows the HASTAM Risk Management Model and places emphasis on the effective and efficient management of hazards and risks.

It includes the following material.

Bullet risk assessment including
    - implementation of RCMs and RCSs
    - reliability of and dependence on RCMs
Bullet behavioural safety and safety culture
Bullet monitoring and measuring OH&S performance
Bullet managing common hazards.
