Hastam's Chairman, Professor Andrew Hale, and Chief Executive, Mike Vyvyan, are supported by a senior team including the long-serving directors Professor Richard Booth, Dr Tony Boyle and David Hewitt together with relative newcomer, Robin Chaplin. Our team of consultants has a wide variety of backgrounds and specialist knowledge.

Andrew HaleChairman

Professor Andrew Hale, MA, PhD, C. Psychol, MErgS, FIOSH

Professor Andrew Hale leads Hastam's Research and Development activities.

He was Professor of Safety Science at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands from 1984 to 2007. He worked previously at Aston University, Department of Health and Safety where he was a founder member of Hastam. Andrew took over as Chairman in May 2009 following his return to the UK from The Netherlands.

Andrew has chaired, or served on, numerous committees at national and European level relating to safety professionals and their training, safety management and transport safety. His research, teaching and consulting work has been concentrated on human behaviour and safety, safety management and culture and the fundamental principles of risk control. Also in the Expert Witness team.

Mike VyvyanChief Executive

Mike Vyvyan, MSc, MBA, Chartered FCIPD

Mike is responsible to the Board for the management and development of Hastam.

He is psychologist who over the past twenty-two years has successfully undertaken a diverse range of consultancy projects related to training, change management, business development and improvement, cultural change and behavioural safety.

During this time Mike has managed two consultancy practices and worked in a senior role in a third.

Immediately prior to joining Hastam he was the chief executive of an international consultancy practice. He also has a background of industrial management, having worked for RHM Foods and ICI. 

 

Directors

Richard BoothProfessor Richard Booth, PhD, DIC, FIMechE, CEng, CFIOSH, Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner

Professor Richard Booth takes the lead on Hastam's Expert Witness projects.

Richard is Professor Emeritus of Occupational Safety and Health and Director of the Health and Safety Unit, Aston University which he joined in 1972.

He was a founder member of Hastam in 1984 and was Chairman from December 1998 to May 2009 and remains a non-executive Director.

He was a founder-Chairman of NEBOSH and President of IOSH from 1986 to 1988. Also in the Expert Witness team.

 

Tony BoyleDr Tony Boyle, BSc, MSc, PhD, CPsychol, AFBPsS, CFIOSH,  Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner

Dr Tony Boyle leads Hastam's team in developing and delivering training and strategic advice and support.

Tony started his career with the National Institute of Industrial Psychology in 1969 and was Managing Director and then Chairman of Hastam from 1987 to 1998. He retired as Chairman of Hastam to allow more time for his research and development work, but he remains a non-executive Director of the company.

He was the originator of Hastam's Complete Health and Safety Evaluation System (CHASE) and has developed audit and evaluation systems for a number of organisations. Current areas of interest include risk assessment, human factors and health and safety management systems, particularly OHSAS 18001. Also in the Expert Witness team.

David HewittDavid Hewitt, BSc, MSc

David heads the development of the CHASE family of software systems.

He joined Hastam in 1988, becoming IT Director in 1991.  He has wide experience of Personal Computer software applications and programming languages including Microsoft's Windows, Office and Visual Studio plus HTML, PHP & Javascript.

 

 

Robin Chaplin, BSc, CMIOSH

Robin ChaplinRobin Chaplin is responsible for assisting Hastam to develop new business.

Has a particular interest in creating leading edge performance, and is fully conversant with the practical problems faced in doing so having had over thirty years `front line` industrial experience within Petrochemicals (ICI; BP), and subsequently at SHE Director level within several major Construction, Utilities (Morrison, Bovislendlease, Balfour Beatty) and Infrastructure Management industries (AWG plc) as well as the Nuclear Sector (Magnox).

Robin has worked internationally (Asia; Americas and Europe) with projects involving business improvement by deriving strategic standards enhancement, behavioural improvement leading to the enhancement of safety culture, as well work conducting strategic structural and business reviews, serious incident investigations and giving technical and management support to key development projects. Also in the Expert Witness team.

LCB SolutionsNeil Berry BSc

Neil has been working with HASTAM since 2010, providing Development and Project Management services. 

Until 2008, Neil worked for a major UK retail bank for over 20 years.  During this time, Neil held a variety of project and operational risk management roles, delivering system, process and cultural change.  He now lives in Finland with his family and is currently working as a consultant for projects in Finland and the UK. In their spare time, the family are building a new house. Neil also has his own company - LCB Solutions.

Kay Heard  BSc

Kay is a highly experienced HASTAM consultant who previously worked for the HSE as a Factory Inspector in the engineering, general manufacturing and construction industries.  She then spent nine years in the public sector as a Safety Adviser for various local authorities.  She has wide experience in health and safety training and consultancy and holds a post-graduate certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

Since joining HASTAM in 1991, she has provided a range of consultancy services, including audits and reviews of safety performance, for a number of HASTAM clients.  Kay was heavily involved in the development of HASTAM's questions for use within the CHASE package to evaluate performance against the HSG65 model.

She has had a wide experience of, and a first class reputation for, the delivery of a wide range of HASTAM courses throughout industry and commerce for all levels of employee from the shop floor to the Board.

Steve HighleySteve Highley BSc MSc CEng FIChemE CMIOSH

Graduate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham (1986). Steve began his career until 2003 was principally in process engineering design and production support in the chemical industry, including plant manager of COMAH sites.

Since 2003 Steve has worked as a risk management consultant.  He received his MSc with distinction in Health and Safety Management in 2005 after studying with the University of Leicester Scarman Centre.  Principle consultancy activities are major accident hazard risk assessment, human error analysis and support for risk management system assessment and development, including legal compliance reviews.  Steve is also able to support the development and delivery of safety training, including for safety culture change and behavioural safety. Also in the Expert Witness team.

Steve joined HASTAM in 2010 and is based in the North West of England.

Janice McTiernan  BA MSc DipOSH Cert Ed MIOSH RSP

Janice is an experienced health and safety consultant who previously worked for the HSE as a Factory Inspector.  She has wide experience in health and safety training and consultancy and holds a post-graduate diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.

She has worked with an extensive range of organisations from councils and pharmaceuticals through to heavy and light engineering.  She is able to communicate at all levels from the Board to the shop floor and has experience of teaching IOSH and NEBOSH courses, as well as bespoke training for topics such as risk assessment, COSHH and accident investigation.  She has also lectured at a Further Education college.

Janice is a NEBOSH examiner at Certificate and Diploma level and is the co-author of several Diploma study books.

Liz ShuttleworthLiz Shuttleworth BSc (Hons)

Liz has worked in the sales & marketing of Health and Safety for over 5 years. Previously she worked as the Managing Director of a charity, being responsible for raising the charity's profile, winning tenders for job profiles and specific projects and strategic and personnel management.

Since joining HASTAM as Business Development Manager in 2009 she has taken responsibility for raising the company profile in the marketplace and ensuring that Hastam's products and services are made available to the public, ensuring the transfer of knowledge and tailored solutions which prevent incidents and increase safety for our clients.
