Health and Safety: Risk Management

by Dr Tony Boyle, ISBN 0 9013 5732 4

Health & Safety Risk Management Following the outstanding success of Tony Boyle’s textbook covering the Risk Management module of the NEBOSH Diploma, a second edition has now been published by IOSH Services Ltd. The textbook is primarily intended for Diploma students and those undertaking safety practitioner NVQs at levels 3 and four. For this reason, the textbook is in two main parts, the first dealing with Part 1 Diploma (and level 3) material and the second with Part 2 Diploma (level 4) material.

However, the first part consists of material which will be of value to anyone who has to manage health and safety and it is a useful source of teaching materials for safety practitioners. The advanced material in the second part will also be of value to those safety practitioners interested in CPD.

Chapter 20 (Advanced accident invstigation and risk management) is available as a free PDF download.

Key Changes

In this second edition Tony has made major changes to a number of chapters in the book and these changes are summarised below.

  • The Quality Management System has been superseded by the ISO 9000:2000 series and its implications for OH&S management is discussed.
  • The ILO OH&S management system is discussed at various points.
  • Extended discussion of OHSAS 18001.
  • A section on competence covers a new HSE publication.
  • The various terms used in the UK to describe risk and how these terms are linked is described.
  • Tony discusses his view that the distinction between reactive and active monitoring is an inappropriate one and describes a more rational approach to collecting data on OH&S performance. This has led to certain changes to the loss management model.
  • The introduction to the chapter on advanced accident investigation and risk assessment has been rewritten to bring out more clearly how these processes overlap.

Copies of the textbook are available from the Lavenham Group. Card order line 01787 249293.
