Mike Vyvyan is a psychologist who over the past twenty-two years has successfully undertaken a diverse range of consultancy projects. Assignments have included:
- government training, development and research initiatives
- the introduction of total quality and world class manufacturing methodologies
- management development at executive and board level
- improvements in key business areas including safety
- business turn-around projects.
During this time Mike has managed two consultancy practices and worked in a senior role in a third. Immediately prior to joining HASTAM he was the chief executive of an international consultancy practice. He also has a background of industrial management, having worked for RHM Foods and ICI.
He has a practical understanding of the importance of excellent safety management both for client organisations and the individuals whose lives and wellbeing are at risk when things go wrong. Underpinning this is an extensive knowledge of the human factors and the organisational issues that lead to risk taking behaviours and ultimately, accidents and injuries. Mike’s passion is to make safety interesting and to engage directors, managers, supervisors and employees in the task of driving safety improvement. This is a passion he has shared many times with others in workshops, university lectures and conferences.
Mike has joined HASTAM to take responsibility for the development of the practice. His extensive consultancy background makes him the ideal person to lead HASTAM in the next phase of its development, building on its successes over the past twenty-five years.

Living in the North East of England, outside of HASTAM Mike has a range of ‘relaxing pastimes’ that are as diverse as his work experiences:
- in reflective moments he writes poetry
- in creative mode he is renovating two Victorian houses
- in indulgent mood he is to be found in the kitchen cooking or eating in a restaurant where Indian food is his delight
- just occasionally you could find him deep sea fishing, walking on the North Yorkshire moors or soaking up Mediterranean sunshine
- with a family of six grown-up children and an increasing number of grandchildren there is never a dull or idle moment.
And by the way his pet hate is the phrase ‘I’m bored’ – perhaps that’s not surprising!
