The Application

CHASE for Windows is written in Microsoft Visual C++ and the executable file is CHASE.EXE. The data is stored in a Microsoft Access format database file (CHASE.MDB) and the security provided by the Microsoft Access workgroup file (CHASE.MDW). The CHASE.MDB file also holds the licence information and serial number for the system. Microsoft Access is not required as the CHASE program provides all the database functions.

Other application files are the help file (CHASE.CHM), a configuration file (CHASE.CFG created when CHASE is run for the first time), a download-database template (CHASE.BDB). Standard dictionaries are in the *.LEX files and, if the "Answer only" option is purchased, there may be a CHASE.CSM file.

Graphics are provided by the Graphics Server 5.5 program and the appropriate run-time files (GSW32.EXE and others) are installed in the Windows\System directory.

Various other DLLs (eg MFC40.DLL, MSVCRT40.DLL, etc) will also be installed in the Windows\System directory if they are not already present. The Microsoft Jet Engine run-time files and DAO 3.6 are installed to provide database functionality. (NB Windows Me, 2000, XP, Vista and 7 already have these files installed as part of the OS.)

Crystal Reports(R) runtime files are provided by Crystal Reports and most will be placed in the Windows\Crystal\ folder.

Spell checking is provided by the Polar SpellChecker Version 5 from Polar Software.

Installation is carried out using the Microsoft Windows Installer Service.  If this is not already on the computer, it will be installed first, followed by the installation of CHASE itself.  If you uninstall CHASE for Windows, this has been configured NOT to uninstall the CHASE database files (CHASE.MDB, CHASE.MDW and CHASE.CFG).  This means that accidental un-installation will not remove the data files.

If you need to know exactly which files are installed, they are listed here.

There are no licensing implications with any of these ancillary files.

Networking

The multi-user version of CHASE for Windows may be installed on a local area network for up to five users without incurring additional charges from HASTAM. There are two recommended installation configurations.

1.  Install the application and database files on the server in one directory (selectable during setup) and run CHASE from there. Workstations using the application will still require the System files to be installed in their Windows\System directories. Use the Custom Install option to install these on the workstations.

2.  Install the application and system files on the workstation and the data files in a server directory (installation option). The command line of the Windows short cut used to start CHASE will be modified to

[program path]CHASE.EXE [directory path]

where [directory path] is the location of the CHASE.MDB and CHASE.MDW files. For example, if the data files are on drive H in a folder called AUDIT, the command line would be

"C:\Program files\HASTAM\CHASE\Chase.exe" H:\AUDIT

or

"C:\Program files\HASTAM\CHASE\Chase.exe" \\ServerName\SharedDriveName\AUDIT

To provide other workstations with access to the data files, install the system on the workstation, setting the database file location as appropriate.  You should select a Custom installation and do not install the database file or the conversion files.

The second network option imposes a lower demand on the network as it only has to handle data traffic and not the application itself. The Custom Install option provided by the installation program should be used for these types of installation.

You may install the application and system files on more than one workstation, provided there is only one copy of the CHASE.MDB file on the network.

The single user version may be setup with the application on a workstation and the database files on a network server, thus providing security for the data.   However, it will not permit multiple users.

Hardware Requirements
