This CHASE module is in two parts:

SMS (Safety Management System) which is concerned with the documentation of what an organisation intends to do with respect to health and safety management, and the adequacy of this documentation.

SMi (Safety Management implementation) complements SMS by testing the application of these principles in the workplace.

The CHASE system

  • follows the philosophy of either
    • the HSG65 model as in BS 8800 and the 2nd edition of the HSE publication "Successful Health and Safety Management" (version HSG65),
      or
    • OHSAS 18001 and the associated 18002 guidance (revised edition due out later in the year)
  • helps establish procedures for risk assessment and control
  • identifies health and safety training needs
  • provides an effective means of active monitoring and auditing safety performance
  • reinforces the role of line managers in the management of safety
  • provides an effective self training tool for managers
  • leads to cost effective safety management.

The CHASE system consists of sets of questions with guidance on answering the questions. Each set of CHASE questions is available as a module for HASTAM's CHASE software.

Using our software systems, clients are encouraged to tailor the standard CHASE questions to reflect their own risks, policies and procedures.

The example below shows a typical SMS HSG65 question in CHASE.

CHASE SMi Question

For instances where a question does not apply, it can be answered Not Applicable (N/A) which removes it from the scoring system.  In some cases entire sections or sub-sections can be marked as Not Applicable, thus enabling CHASE to be used in a wide range of situations.  For best results we recommend you make use of the Editor to "fine tune" the questions.  This allows you to remove questions or sections which do not apply anywhere in the organisation, add questions or sections where they are needed and adjust the wording, especially the guidance information, to match that used in the organisation.
