General FAQs
I have just moved S-CHASE to a new computer (Pentium 333MHz) and when I try and run it I always get the message "Run-time Error 200". Have I missed a copying a file?
No. It's the technology that has moved on. S-CHASE was written using a computer language called Borland Pascal. Unfortunately, programs written in this language will not run correctly on very fast computers (typically Pentium II 266MHz or faster). However, a "fix" has been made available that cures this. Please contact us, or complete the support request form at the end of this page, and we will send it to you. Alternatively, you can download it yourself from http://www.brain.uni-freiburg.de/~klaus/pascal/runerr200/download.html
I get error "1005 Insufficient file handles" whenever I try to run S-CHASE. What is the problem?
S-CHASE uses a large number of files simultaneously - often as many as 64. To minimise the chance of errors S-CHASE attempts to open this number of files when it starts and, if it fails, it reports this error.
The error can be caused by one of two things. On a standalone machine the CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of the C: drive must contain a line with the value "FILES=70". On a Novell network it may also be necessary to include a "Filehandles 70" line in the Net.cfg or Shell.cfg files. If you are using Windows NT as your operating system, the CONFIG.SYS file is replaced by the CONFIG.NT file found in the \WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory.
You must re-start the computer for either of these changes to take effect.
How can I backup the S-CHASE Data?
All your data is stored in files in sub-directories of the S-CHASE directory. You should make regular backups of the S-CHASE using one of the many backup systems available. Always backup the whole directory. If you attempt partial backups of some files you may miss important index files which would make restoration of the data difficult.
How do I go back to an evaluation that has already been completed?
Completed evaluations are found through the Evaluations | Completed Evaluations by... options.
I have re-opened a completed evaluation and want to make changes to it but I cannot. Why?
When you finish an evaluation through the Finish Evaluation option the evaluation is "frozen". You cannot make further changes unless your User name has the Verify or Administrator rights.
How do I save the settings I have set up in, for example, the print options?
You dont have to. S-CHASE saves them automatically, together with your current analysis table set-up, etc. Around 50 different settings are saved.
NOTE: These settings are saved with your User Name. Two different users may have different preferences and requirements and thus changes to settings you make will not apply to a different user.
Can I print in colour?
Colour printing is implemented for the graphics but not at present for text printing. Only a limited range of Hewlett Packard printers are supported.
I have written a new module and now want to give it to the other S-CHASE users in the company. How do I do this?
Use the Modules | Backup facility to make a copy of your module on a floppy disk. This can be sent to your other users who can then use the Module | Upload facility to incorporate it into their own systems.
I loaded S-CHASE on my colleague's machine as well as my own but when I created a module, downloaded it to a floppy disk and then uploaded onto his computer, it overwrote the module he wrote. What have I done wrong?
By installing a second copy onto another machine you broke the Copyright Agreement. You cannot move data between two installations made from the same system disk without generating errors. Contact HASTAM to arrange the purchase of a second copy of S-CHASE. Significant discounts are available for second and subsequent purchases.
Whenever I try to create a new module I get a program error when I press F10 to save it. The name appears but I cannot access it as I get a "file not found message". My S-CHASE system is on a Novell Sever.
Your Network ID (not the S-CHASE ID) probably does not have directory creation rights. S-CHASE stores each module in its own sub-directory in the Module directory of S-CHASE and your network ID must have the right to create and delete sub-directories.

Analysis FAQs
How can I compare the verified and unverified score for an evaluation?
Either load the evaluation a second time using the Load option. With this highlighted press D for the Display menu, choose Scores and select Verified from the pop-up menu. This sets one column to Normal scores and the other to Verified scores.
I have tried to do this but each time both columns set themselves to Normal or Verified.
You have the Summary column active. Summaries require all evaluation columns to be in the same mode. If you change one column, all the others will change to match. Press S for Summary and select Off from the pop-up menu.
I have several evaluations loaded but cant create a summary - the summary option is missing. What am I doing wrong?
The scores in a summary are calculated on a question by question basis. This will only work if all the evaluations are based on the same module. If there is more than one module present in the table the summary option is disabled. It may also be disabled if there is only one module but the tag settings are different in the different evaluations, you are displaying completed evaluations and are including scores for deleted questions, or you have one or more targets loaded.
Can I copy the data to a spreadsheet?
Yes. In the Analysis Table press E for Export. You can then save the table to a tab-delimited or comma delimited file. This can be imported into your spreadsheet at a later date. Refer to your spreadsheet manual for instructions on reading delimited files as the actual method varies.
When I change the summary column to show an Absolute Summary, the scores in my columns suddenly change. What is wrong?
Nothing is wrong. Absolute summaries require that for a question to score a Yes in the summary, it must be answered Yes in all evaluations used to generate the summary. If the questions are not Yes/No but Percentage, Word or Marks answers, CHASE has to turn these into Yes or No by applying the compliance criteria. If you are not using compliance in your columns they will switch automatically to Local Compliance before the summary scores are calculated.

Area FAQs
I set up an area called Birmingham Factory on my central S-CHASE system. However, when the user at the Birmingham Factory sent me an evaluation and I uploaded it, I found a second area called Birmingham Factory on my system with the data assigned to it and my own remained blank. Why did S-CHASE do this?
All records in CHASE are identified by internal ID numbers. The user at Birmingham will have created an area record called Birmingham Factory and this copy of S-CHASE will have identified it with a number generated based on its serial number. Your area called Birmingham Factory will have a different ID because your copy has a different serial number. When you uploaded the data, a copy of area record created at Birmingham was also uploaded and this is the one used. If you are importing data from other sites always allow the area records to come from those sites (they are always downloaded automatically with an evaluation) and do not attempt to create them yourself. Only ever create areas for which you will conduct evaluations yourself. You can delete your own area called Birmingham Factory as it will never be required.
How many areas can I have?
The practical maximum number of areas is about 500 per system. If you expect to have more than this you should upgrade to CHASE for Windows.

Evaluation FAQs
I have answered all the questions but the program still shows the evaluation as pending. Why is this?
Although you may have answered all the questions, you may still wish to make notes and recommendations. S-CHASE does not know you have completed the evaluation until you explicitly finish it. This can be done through the Finish evaluation option underneath the list of sections.
I set up a dummy evaluation to test the software and now want to delete it, but I can't find out how to do this. Is it possible?
Yes, but we deliberately made it a little difficult to do, so it doesn't happen accidentally. First you must finish the evaluation - go into it and select Finish evaluation. Now come back to the main Evaluation menu and select Move. This will allow you to move the evaluation to a floppy disk.
I want to perform a re-evaluation of an area but all I can do is go through last years answers. How can I keep last years evaluation and perform a new one for this year?
You need to finish last years evaluation (see above). You can then start a fresh evaluation for this year (if you have set up the allocation properly the due date should be approximately correct). When you do this you will be given the option of either filling in a blank set of questions or copying the previous years answers and updating them.
I have verified a question by mistake. Can I unverify it?
Yes, press V again. NB: only Users with Verify or Administrator status can do this.
Why do you call them evaluations and not audits?
CHASE is designed to be used both for self assessment and by independent assessors for audit purposes. A self-assessment cannot be classed as an audit as it is not carried out by an independent assessor. We use Evaluation as a generic term to include both audits and self-assessments.
Can I print out one section of the evaluation to take on-site?
Yes. Open the evaluation and select the section you want to print. At the bottom of the menu there will be an option to Print section.
I want to print just the unanswered questions so that I can take the printout on site. Is there any way I can do this?
In the Print Options screen make sure there is a tick in the "Unanswered questions" box but not in the "Answered questions" box.
Can I print a list of the evaluations due for my Health and Safety Module over the next 12 months?
Go to the Evaluations menu, select Evaluations by module and Uncompleted. Select Dates from the View menu and set the Until date to one year ahead. Select the module name from the list of modules and then select Print from the Evaluations Due menu.

Module FAQs
Can I copy questions from one module to another?
Yes. Use the Import option which appears on most of the Editor menus.
How can I re-order the sections within a module?
Each section is given a number and S-CHASE always displays these numbers in ascending order. To re-position a section within the module (or a sub-section within a section) select Edit section details and select the section you wish to reposition. In the section edit screen use the up arrow to move the cursor to the section number and change it to the number you want the section to become. If a section with that number already exists, it and those following will have their numbers increased by one. Once you have re-positioned your sections you may want to use Renumber to ensure there are no gaps.
I have a Safety Policy Document and I would like the CHASE question numbers to be the same as the items they refer to within the policy. Can I do this?
Yes. In the Module Editor open the required module, then edit each section (see above) or question and manually set the numbers to the required value. If you do this you must not use the Tools | Renumber option!
