Taking Safety Seriously

Not just another safety course

Are your managers and supervisors really engaged in actively managing those safety issues that matter to your business? Do they adequately understand the hazards, risks, the potential errors and lapses that could lead to people being seriously injured, killed or your plant being destroyed?  Do they recognise the need to actively manage and control those issues that could adverse impact on people, plant, process, products and places.

Hastam's work as Expert Witnesses, in both criminal and civil cases, indicates that all too often operational managers' perspective of safety and their role in managing it responsibly is inadequate or ill informed. Consequently luck rather than good judgement becomes their principal safeguard. Frequently managers in operational roles view safety as a hindrance to getting on with the task in hand. No supervisor or manages wants their people to be hurt, nor do they want to have the inconvenience or hassle that results from an accident.  However, that does not stop them from acting sceptically towards management requirements that they view as a bureaucratic imposition.  When it comes to training related to safety, they are often heard to complain, "Not another safety course!"  So how do you persuade them to become really engaged with safety?

To address this challenge, Hastam have designed an interactive workshop that seeks to give managers a different perspective and experience.  Based on a case-study approach delegates work through a serious safety incident and are assisted to understand the factors that contributed to it occurring. They are then encouraged to consider these factors from their work perspective, and how they might relate to their role and the processes and people they manage.   During the workshop, this process is repeated with a number of case studies and the lessons applied.  The case study approach emphasises the practical issues that constitute dynamic safety management rather than theory, which some managers consider an irrelevance.
Importantly delegates are assisted to identify the lessons that are most pertinent to them and agree a small number of improvement actions that they will pursue once back in their workplace so the client organisation can be assured that their investment will give an excellent return.

In addition, prior to delivering the event, Hastam will work with the client organisation to ensure that the workshop is tailored to their situation, risks and the needs of attendees.
