Doctor Luise Vassie has an extensive professional experience in research, teaching and consultancy and a proven track record of delivering sustainable business improvements in health and safety risk management across a range of sectors.
Luise spent almost 10 years in a number of senior policy and research roles at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH); her most recent role was the executive director of Policy with responsibility for leading the Policy division, comprising the public affairs, research and information services and communications functions, and the strategic development and communication of policy, research findings and technical guidance, including influencing governments and other key stakeholders.
Prior to this, Luise held academic posts in Leicester, Loughborough and Swansea Universities over a 16-year period. At Swansea University, She investigated the feasibility of using laser-based techniques for monitoring the integrity of safety critical coatings used in space vehicles in near-earth orbit. She joined Loughborough University initially to carry out research into the safety aspects of laser-technology. At the University of Leicester she produced the first MSc in Health and Safety Management to position health and safety in the context of corporate governance. Throughout her academic career, Luise has successfully implemented a range of continuous improvement / change management initiatives in chemical, manufacturing, R&D and utilities sectors leading to improvement in health and safety culture and performance. She has published over 50 pieces including a co-authored book, book chapters, peer reviewed journals and conferences papers and professional journal articles and official reports.
Her specialist areas of expertise include
- Diagnosis of organisational health and safety management issues using a variety of techniques eg interview, survey, focus group, audit
- Design & evaluation of interventions aimed at addressing issues in(1) and effecting improvement in health and safety management.
